Financial Aid
by Ginger Foster
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) needs to be completed by every student and his/her parent(s). Priority deadline: March 1, 2012
Information below:
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) can be found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov . This is the starting point for those looking for grants for college. Grants are free money usually given on the basis of financial need, and they do not have to be repaid. The application looks intimidating, but when it is taken question-by-question, it is very manageable. The most vital information needed comes from the parents' 2010 federal income tax return. Go to this site, print out the worksheet and complete it, and then go to the computer to fill out the application. PELL grants are awarded from this information.
All seniors or their parents need to fill out this application. Even if your family does not have the level of financial need to qualify for a PELL grant, you will need to fill this out in order to receive other grants and non-need-based scholarships from colleges.
In order to complete the process, the student and one parent will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) in order to submit the application electronically. These can be obtained at any time at www.pin.ed.gov . Full names, birth dates, addresses, and social security numbers are required to apply for these numbers. Make sure you keep up with the PIN once it is issued because it cannot be easily accessed again.
