Letter to Parents

by Paula Speir

October 14, 2008

Dear Parents,

I am excited about having your child in my Algebra I class.  This will be a great year.  I wanted you to know that this year we will be using TI 83 Plus graphing calculators in our Algebra 1 class.  We will have a limited supply of calculators for use in the classroom, so I’m recommending each student purchase their own calculator.  Having their own calculator encourages self-paced individual exploration, and allows for consistency between work done at school and home.  Also, having their own calculator will allow students to become more proficient with graphing calculators which are required for the 9th, 10th and 11th grade TAKS test.  Your student can use the same calculator from high school through college.  We have an engraver at school and can put your child’s name on his or her calculator.

Each student will be issued an Algebra 1 book and they will need to take special care of it.  A fine of $10 will be charged to any student who writes in their book.  I will have a classroom set of books in my room so students will not need to bring their book to class. Your student may keep the book that is issued to them at home all year.  The book is also online.  Go to http://www.classzone.com and click on math – high school, Texas, then choose the first book (Algebra I 2007 Texas).  At this site you will find many helpful resources such as: an at home tutor, power point presentations, practice tests, self-grading quizzes, vocabulary flashcards, and games.  Students will be able to have any lesson re-taught using the @Home Tutor.  This is a great resource if a student misses a day of instruction.  Students may also come to my room during 1st lunch tutorials to get extra help.  I will also be at school by 7:40 and am willing to stay after school to provide extra help.  My conference period is 5th period from 11:12 to 11:57.  Parents feel free to call me during this time or come to see me.  You may also email me.  My email address is pspeir@rivercrestisd.net.  I am looking forward to a great year.
