Microsoft in it's infinite wisdom decided to change the format of it's documents in the new Office suite. Consequently the new Word documents (docx) and Excel spreadsheets (xlsx) can not be opened with older versions of Word and Excel. This has been a problem when someone sends a document in the new format. The sender can save as an older version, however there are some online converters available.

They claim to be able to convert almost any file, document or image to a comparable format. I've have used it to convert PDF to DOC and DOC to PDF and it seems to work fine. Try it next time you have a file that won't open.
